Visiting From April To Mid - May

With the onset of April, starts the beginning of tourist season in Ladakh, when the place becomes agile and active. Restaurants, hotels, motels, and guesthouses start opening and getting ready to receive the pouring tourists, adventurers, trekkers, and vacationers.

It’s the time when the Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri Lake starts welcoming all get ready to enthrall all. By the time it reaches the second week of May, opens the Srinagar-Leh highway making way for the tourists to rock Ladakh.

Mid - May To July

By this time the Srinagar-Leh highway get opened, and one could easily visit there to be the few first reaching there. Though, many consider this time as not the right time to be there as other highways are yet to open. Somewhere near early June opens the Manali road along with the Rohtang Pass.

The first 7-10 days are recommended for caution or to take precaution on the way as there is a chance of blockages due to the changing weather conditions. But, visiting Ladakh just before the monsoons, is worth braving the hurdles and obstructions to have the glimpses of nature when it is at its best.

Close to Rohtang you may found roads flanked by high snow walls giving you the incredible views of pervading snow to have fun and excitement all around. But, there’s a piece of caution here as the roads and paths got wet with gushing water making it difficult to cross them.

August To Mid - September

With Monsoons in full swing, the rivers are at their youth with abundant water, fresh energy, and new life to flow at their full might. As the landslides during monsoons get frequent, traveling becomes risky and dangerous to avoid to the extent it could be.

At this time it’s advisable to be in the rain shadow area to enjoy the weather and picturesque views of Ladakh such as the region beyond Zojj La Pass towards Leh from Srinagar. The area from Baralacha Pass towards Leh is also considered as rain shadow area as it too doesn’t receive much rainfall.

However, traveling during monsoons is not recommended unless someone is dying hard to visit Ladakh during this monsoon month.

Mid - September To Mid-October

This period is the best time to visit Leh and Ladakh. The whole place is picturesque and imbued with beautiful colors to enchant the tourists and lure them to be there without fail. The Srinagar-Leh, as well as Manali-Leh roads, are at their best as the monsoons are over and the maintenance work is complete.

The all other hurdles and obstructions, which otherwise make visiting Ladakh a challenge no more exists, and let tourists enjoy the serenity and the beauty at their best. The rivers too are at their best as the water has receded and the river flows majestically with their full charm and beauty.

Mid - October To Mid-November

The tourists and the other visitors start departing from Ladakh as the entire area got engulfed in the cold weather with many areas experiencing sub-zero temperature above 14,000 ft. Most of the hotels, guesthouses, lodges, restaurants and other places get closed by this time. Even the localities too, abandon the area to warm homes because of chill winters.

Though the highway as Srinagar-Leh and Manali-Leh are still open, there’s no wisdom traveling through them. Black-ice formation begins during this period and covers the Ladakh till the winter is over.

Mid - November To March

The Ladakh went through the coldest season during this time and got completely cut-off by road from rest of India. Khardung La and Chang Las receive snowfall. Though the temperature is below freezing, making survival and acclimatization difficult, but from Mid-January to Mid-March adventurers start arriving for the famous Chadar trek and Zanskar river walk.

Zanskar river, which is completely frozen by now becomes the next attraction for the visitors during this time. The temperature keeps dipping further making cold further severe by every passing day and completely freezing all lakes of Ladakh, making walking comfortable over them.

Though the weather is harsh, the Pangong Tso and Tso Moriri still attract the visitors for their changing colors from November to Mid-January.
